Military voting emphasized today, Texas secretary of state says

September 14, 2012

There are indications this coming presidential election will be one of the closest races in recent history and the call to vote is intense.

Government officials from several states have started nonpartisan campaigns for their residents to get out and vote, including Texas Secretary of State Hope Andrade, who joins Heroes Vote Initiative to mark National Military Voter Readiness Day, which is today.

The intent is to raise awareness among military members and their spouses about the importance of voting and to make sure members of the military are election-ready. It is the first and only nationwide campaign to encourage military voter participation, Andrade said.

Texas has the largest number of active-duty military personnel — 131,548 — of any state, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau data.
